I am working through an ageny and this is my first time to be a surrogate although my husband and I have had it on our minds for about 4 years now. We are 100% on board and ready to give someone their dream. I am completely excited .

During my interview with the agency I had some questions, and my case manager suggested that I find a forum and ask some New and some Experienced IP's for their input. I know that You go through a lot to become a Parent, and want whats best for you new child.

I do understand that everyone feels different and that these are a case by case subject.

I do not believe in abortion. And in my mind Fetal Reduction is a form of abortion. So what I want to know is....... what would make you deside if you needed to, to have Fetal Reduction or Selective Reduction done?

And also Quality of Life? What would have to take place in the pregnancy/ development of your baby for you to opt to have an abortion and not carry out the pregnancy?

Thank You for your input, like I said these are questions that I have going through my mind and just want the other side ( IPs ) advice/input.

I would not have a fetal reduction. My good friend interviewed 4 different high risk ob's
during her pregnancy and all of them counseled her on reduction (she was preggo with triplets), but they
decided against it.

I knew that if our surrogate became pregnant with multiples that I'd
definitely do my research and find a dr who I
trusted/felt comfortable with when making such a big decision.  I can
understand your concerns about what if your surrogate was carrying
triplets... My good friend is 5'5", and ended up having a relatively
"easy" triplet
pregnancy.  From what they all told me, having a reduction does put your
entire pregnancy at risk, but it also depends on how/where your babies
are in your uterus.  It's a very big decision, with many emotional
up/downs, as I'm sure you know, but if you transfer 2 or less, the
possiblity of one splitting is extremely rare, so I really don't think
you'll have to deal with this, but it's great to be prepared in the case
and have it in your contract & have an understanding with your
surrogate.

As far as quality of life. We opted out to have the testing that showed if our baby had Downs or believe in abortion because of something of this nature. I felt that if God gave me a child with special needs, I would deal with it because that's what God intended me to have.

I hope everything goes well for you! If you have any other questions, I'd love to help!

Doing just lovely!

Good questions!

With selective reduction, you visually see the baby die. They inject a saline solution into the heart of the baby(ies) which is visible on the ultrasound monitor. Once its life has been extinguished, the body will naturally absorb the deceased fetus. To me, that definitely sounds horrible and I am too against abortion. It also puts the other babies at risk. I agree, to not implant more than 2 and the possibility of getting pregnant with more than twins I'm sure is extremely rare. I have heard of one splitting and resulting in triplets, but it's not something I thought too much into because I guess I just never thought it's happen to me.. but, I think it's great you are asking now and I can see, especially in a surrogate's view (hello it's your body) that it's something you need to think about. Unless there is danger to the surrogate or babies, I strongly would be against fetal reduction. That's just my opinion though!

Good luck
