The Finnish Family Federation said Monday that Finland should allow surrogate pregnancies, adding it feared that continuing to ban the practice risked driving it underground.

The federation does not wish to estimate how many women travel abroad for surrogacy.

By contrast, the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare is against legalising surrogacy over worries of psychological issues between the child and the mothers.

Finland banned surrogacy in 2007. Surrogate mothers gave birth to 18 children before the amended piece of legislation on fertility treatments entered into force.
